“Whether
the music calls for something simple and pure or dark and complex, I
always try to reach for that transporting quality and beauty in
the voice and the music, a place that is uplifting and inspirational,
so that the listener is taken on a journey through the music and
through the sound and tone of the voice and thus it also allows for
them to connect into that place within themselves. I have to
be able to journey into this place myself and feel the beauty - then I
know that others will connect here too”.
“I’ve
always tried to stay true to my own voice, which in earlier years
wasn’t necessarily an easy course to take. I always seemed to be
swimming against the tide – doing one thing, whilst the rest of the
music world seemed to be doing something completely different.
But I believe - and continue to believe – that, in order for one’s
creativity to be received in the way it was meant, it has to come from
a place of truth – ones own truth. You have to stay true to
yourself and follow your own creative impulse despite what anyone else
may think. It is only through this process that you find yourself
and thus your own individual place of expression. I suppose this
is true in all things in this experience that is life.”
“I
work in Logic Pro 8 and use a combination of many different sounds,
synths, soft synths and samplers to create my own unique ‘sound’.
I also use Kontakt both for the orchestral elements and as another
source of palette and texture. I love to throw different
combinations of things together that might not on the surface appear to
work – cutting up loops, using my voice in different ways and with
different effects, blending, mixing, shaping sound so that I can keep
on evolving and finding a new means of expression. I have
also sampled my entire vocal range and sang breathy ‘aahs’ in layers of
16 vocals per note which can be played - when I sing with that, it
creates these incredibly lush textures.
Oh and most importantly, I also make really good tea!”
